The porphyrias constitute a series of disorders connected with the metabolism of heme. They are hereditary disorders and in a family where one of the parents has the disposition for porphyria about 50% of the children run the risk of inheriting the disposition. In general only one type of porphyria is found in a family. There are two groups of porphyria, the acute porphyrias and the cutaneous porphyrias.
